Welcome to IOPWAVE
An innovative IoT-based glaucoma monitoring system that helps detect and track Intraocular Pressure (IOP) for early glaucoma diagnosis and management.
View DashboardAbout Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye (intraocular pressure or IOP). Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60.
It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults. Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs, and the effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage.
Because vision loss due to glaucoma can't be recovered, it's important to have regular eye exams that include measurements of your eye pressure so a diagnosis can be made in its early stages and treated appropriately.
How to Identify Glaucoma
Early Symptoms
- Patchy blind spots in your side (peripheral) or central vision, frequently in both eyes
- Tunnel vision in the advanced stages
- Severe headache
- Eye pain
- Blurred vision
- Halos around lights
- Eye redness
Risk Factors
- High intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Age over 60
- Family history of glaucoma
- Medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure)
- Eye injuries
- Long-term use of corticosteroid medications
- Thin corneas
- Extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness
Diagnostic Tests
- Tonometry: Measures intraocular pressure
- Ophthalmoscopy: Examines the optic nerve
- Perimetry: Tests peripheral vision
- Gonioscopy: Inspects the drainage angle
- Pachymetry: Measures corneal thickness
- OCT: Optical Coherence Tomography
Existing Monitoring Models
Goldmann Applanation Tonometry
The gold standard for measuring IOP, requiring a clinical setting. It involves direct contact with the cornea and provides accurate readings but needs a trained professional.
Rebound Tonometry
Uses a probe that makes a momentary contact with the cornea. More portable than Goldmann but still requires clinical expertise for accurate measurements.
Non-contact Tonometry
Uses a puff of air to measure IOP. Less accurate than contact methods but convenient for screening purposes.
Our IoT-Based Model
GlaucoGuard System
Our innovative system uses ESP32 microcontroller coupled with ultrasonic sensors and pressure measurement to provide a non-invasive, real-time monitoring solution for intraocular pressure.
The system measures acoustic radiation force (ARF) and calculates corneal deformation, which is directly related to IOP. This data is then transmitted to a cloud database for analysis and monitoring.
Key features include:
- Real-time IOP monitoring
- Cloud-based data storage and analysis
- Remote access to IOP data
- Early detection of IOP spikes
- User-friendly web interface
- Affordable and accessible technology
